Running to end hunger - a day to remember at the Cardiff Half

Forty-five runners took on the Cardiff Half Marathon 13.1-mile challenge for Cardiff Foodbank on Sunday 4 October, raising both money and awareness of the charity that provides emergency food and support to people in crisis.

For the second year, Cardiff company, Sustainable Energy Ltd joined #TeamCardiffFoodbank by fielding a team of runners. Currently their total raised  stands at more than £1,400.

Annie Hillman, Fundraising Officer for Cardiff Foodbank thanked everyone who ran, fundraised, volunteered and cheered on the team throughout the day. She said: “We’re incredibly proud of our team this year.  Our runners have not only taken on the physical challenge of 13.1 miles, but many of them have truly gone the extra mile with their fundraising efforts.

“We are so grateful to everyone who has donated and supported #TeamCardiffFoodbank at the Cardiff Half Marathon”.

Breakfast buddies

Cardiff Foodbank runners also provided plenty of colour on the course, with runners proudly wearing Cardiff Foodbank’s new running tops. Among them were three runners dressed as cereal boxes and another as a carton of UHT milk – the charity’s ‘Breakfast Buddies’, who used the challenge to raise awareness of the importance of breakfast as part of its emergency food provision in their food parcels.

“We’ll be announcing the totals in early November as we know that money will still be coming into our runners Just Giving pages,”said Annie Hillman.

I was so happy to see the support at the magic roundabout. I was worried I would miss you like I missed my friends who came to support me on the course . I found it difficult again this year but still had a personal best. Well done to you all on your efforts! Cardiff is a very tough course and it was so hot today.

Cardiff Foodbank’s Cheer Squad was also out in force, setting up near the Magic Roundabout in Splott. The group brought plenty of energy and encouragement to runners and provided a mid-point boost during the challenging course.

Raising spirits and smiles was (a life-size cut out) Harry Styles who proved popular with runners - even appearing in the Wales Online round-up of the Half Marathon.
